Our medically supervised weight loss program is directed by bariatrician Dr. Theresa Garza. She is a board-certified physician with extensive education in the medical treatment of obesity and its associated conditions. Our medical weight loss program cares for overweight/obese patients through a comprehensive program of diet and nutrition, exercise, lifestyle changes, and when needed, the prescription of appetite suppressants and other appropriate medications.
Is this a non-surgical weight loss treatment?
Yes. Our program is directed by a physician and includes medical evaluation and monitoring, dietary therapy, exercise therapy, behavior modification and maintenance programs.
Have you already decided to have bariatric surgery?
Many insurance companies require completion of a medically supervised weight loss program focused on diet and exercise prior to approval for bariatric surgery. This can range between 3-12 months depending on the insurance carrier. Make an appointment to see Dr. Garza to start the appropriate documentation to fulfill insurance criteria.
What if you didn’t qualify for bariatric surgery?
Our program offers patients who may not meet the criteria for surgery different options for meeting weight loss goals.

If you have already had surgery, Dr. Garza works hand in hand with the bariatric surgeons and their dedicated staff to personalize an aftercare program, designed to help you achieve long-term weight management. If you have been facing challenges since your surgery, Dr. Garza provides individualized counseling to help you get back on track and assists in relapse prevention programs.
Dr. Theresa Garza earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Texas at Austin with honors. She then attended medical school at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth. She completed her residency at Methodist Hospitals of Dallas, joined an existing family practice group, and helped open two more family medicine clinics in the Dallas area. Dr. Garza has served as medical director for a gastric band company, in which she managed patients pre- and post-operatively including the development of aftercare programs. She has appeared numerous times on Good Morning Texas to discuss obesity and gastric banding. For over six years, she has been working with bariatric patients with the education and treatment of obesity as well as the related co-morbid conditions. Dr. Garza is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and eligible by the American Board of Bariatric Medicine. She is a member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, American Academy of Family Physicians, Texas Medical Association, and Dallas County Medical Society. She is also an affiliate physician member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
